A refitted fire engine is hauled out of the Mersey. Inside are two bodies, each shot twice.

The driver is Mel Townsend, a rock singer who was covering a hen-party shift as a favour. Her passenger is a Swiss man she collected from the airport at midnight. The only clue to his identity is the figurine of a cat in his suitcase, packed in a velvet-lined box.

It looks like a professional hit.

Detective Tara Grogan assumes Mel was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Then Mel's father walks into the station. He is Lord Kingholm, a wealthy peer, and he hasn't spoken to his daughter in nearly four years.

His estranged wife died when a minibus plunged off a mountain road in Nepal. His son was killed in a boating accident off the Dorset coast.

Now his daughter is dead.

Kingholm calls it a tragic coincidence. Tara isn't so sure.

Perfect for fans of Angela Marsons, Jane Casey and Joy Ellis.

MEET THE DETECTIVE:
Detective Inspector Tara Grogan is small, blonde and easily underestimated. People who do soon learn otherwise. Her quiet confidence and stubborn will have brought down some of the vilest killers ever to walk the streets of Liverpool. She prefers persuasion to force, which regularly tests the patience of her burly sergeant, Alan Murray. He likes his cases simple, his jokes crude and his bacon rolls hot. Tara shares a house with her best friend from school, Kate, and Kate's young daughter, Adele. It's her refuge from the horrors of the job, if she ever gets home at a reasonable hour.

THE SETTING:
Liverpool is a city of two faces: from the grand Georgian terraces of Falkner Square to the nightclubs in old warehouses, this is a city where money and trouble live side by side. When Tara needs to escape, she heads home across the water to the Wirral with its calming promenades of Hoylake and New Brighton.

DEADLY COINCIDENCE is the ninth mystery in Robert McCracken's bestselling series featuring headstrong Detective Inspector Tara Grogan of Merseyside Police.
