About
David Thorpe was born in London but grew up on the East Coast. While he always loved the seascapes and big skies of East Anglia, it was his first visit to Cumbria in his mid-twenties that would change his life forever. Falling instantly in love with the dramatic landscapes of mysterious clouded fells towering over jewel like lakes, it didn’t matter where else he travelled in the world, he would always come back to the Lake District.

A career in commerce saw him travel extensively in the UK, Europe and Scandinavia and led to several relocations, including Oxfordshire and Yorkshire – always steadily northward. Upon retirement, he finally achieved his long-held desire to live in the Lakes. Despite being a born and bred southerner, the move felt like coming home.

The DI Wayland mysteries are firmly rooted in the hills and lakes of Cumbria and the inspiration always comes from David finding himself in a beautiful location and suddenly thinking, ‘what if…?’ The joy of writing the novels comes from observing Wayland and his team navigate the landscape as they attempt to unravel the series of knots that tie the truth behind who could have committed such a crime in such a beautiful place. David also enjoys writing in other genre; more of which may be to come.

David is married with two grown up children and two grandchildren. When not writing, he loves walking the fells but although he has climbed many of the 214 fells recorded in the guidebooks written by the famous Alfred Wainwright, he has always avoided noting which ones he has and hasn’t climbed. He enjoys many different styles of music and has played the guitar for many years but always with more enthusiasm than talent. When time allows, he is also attempting to keep an elderly British sportscar on the road, but as a wise man once said: Rust Never Sleeps.
